When I try to print a document that I've accessed through my Firefox Browser, the print options list is grayed out for color printing and I can only print in black & white.

When I want and try to print a document that I've accessed from a website with my Firefox browser, the print options in the box on the right side of my screen is grayed out for printing in color and I can only print in black & white. I have a Brother laser color printer. This is a relatively new problem. I don't know why the color print function is grayed out. I couldn't get a good answer from a Brother tech when I called them on this problem.

Hello,

You can try fixing this by doing the following : 1. use system print dialog First, press Ctrl + P or Cmd + P , then look at the bottom and click Print using system dialog. Then, in the system menu, click preferences/properties, and select color, making sure grayscale isn't selected.

2. reset corrupted Firefox print settings first, flick the Firefox menu button, click more troubleshooting info, and scroll down to printing section and click clear saved print settings. After that, restart Firefox and try again.

3. Force system dialog default First, go to about:config, click accept risk, then search for print.prefer_system_dialog and set it to true. If it doesn't work immediately, try restarting Firefox. keep in mind that you should only use about:config if you know what you are doing.

Could you try to save the document and print it offline? Will it print in color? If not, please check your printer for the color toner.

Hello Desertdish:

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my query re the loss of printing in color in My pull-down Firefox menu to print in color and only in black and white.

You sent me three options. I didn't attempt #3 because in this area I don't know what I'm doing.

In Option #1: I'm able to open up Print System Dialog. However, in that system menu, ''''I see no option to click preferences/properties where I can select color. ''''. Under Firefox options pull down menu under Appearance, there is option to Print Background Colors or Images.

In Option #2: Where do I find "flick the Firefox menu button" on my screen when Firefox is open?

These things I refer to may seem like they're elementary, but to me, they're not.

Your further response would be most appreciated. I am still only able to print black & white on my Brother Laser Color Printer. What adds to my aggravation is that I used to be able to print in color and never had this problem until the past two to three weeks. I even called Brother Tech Support and they directed me to a Brother print function. I never needed to go to a separate print function other than what was displayed at Firefox to print in color. ---Pete

Hello, Wxie,

Printing a document off-line doesn't seem to help me print in color instead of just black and white. And my color laser cartridges are at full capacity. If they weren't I'd get an alert from Brother to replace a low or empty cartridge.

The basic question is: Can you print from any other system app in color? (Photos, Preview, TextEdit etc.)

This looks like something changed on your system (printer drivers during an update?) and now it's presented as a more generic device, perhaps without any color function — otherwise the system panel would have the options (usually under media, quality or presets based on the system version) — so the first check is, does the whole system know it can print color, as the first step?

Dear jbr,

I thank you for making additional comments/suggestions re my inability to print in color using my Apple desktop computer and my Brother Color Laser Printer (HL-L-3270CDW).

In the pull down printer menu under Printer Info the name is shown as Brother HL-L3270CDW series but under model, it shows bold textGeneric PCL Laser Printer. I'll bet that's the problem. I believe I did a printer driver update, directed by Brother. This means I'm going to have to call Brother tech support back and ask to speak with a very experienced tech rep on my particular color laser printer model and how it is now functioning, defaulting to black & white printing using Apple print

I just did a Print Preview on a flyer in color. The Preview screen displays the flyer image in black and white when it is actually in color. In the Print options screen, there is not even a setting or option that I can click for color printing! It defaults to black and white printing only.

I just pulled up a digital picture of myself that is in color that is stored on my desktop. In the Apple Print Preview, it shows only in black and white. That didn't happen before.

I believe it's the newer driver that was installed by Brother's tech support person. Why that Driver appears to be a generic one is beyond my understanding. That driver forces me to use a Brother a separate print function to print an image or picture in color. I never had to do that before. There is something very wrong with this set-up or printing in color procedure for both Apple Print Preview and Firefox print options.. I plan to take this up with Brother this coming Monday. Thanks again for your very helpful suggestions.
