Firefox-esr/ Firefox jumps back to page beginning while scrolling, not solved

more options

I have followed the troubleshooting suggestions with no avail. I am currently in troubleshooting mode with all add-ons disabled. The problem persists. The only way to handle the problem is to depress the scroll wheel on the mouse and start scrolling. However, the problem returns with the next page. The problem shows up on Windows 10 as well as Debian bullseye.

I have used Firefox and Firefox-esr for years on the same platforms. This problem started about six months ago with no resolution. So what has changed? On Win 10 Firefox keeps getting updates whereas Firefox-esr never gets updates. The problem persists on both platforms. More than one mouse has been used with the same results. I have removed Firefox and Firefox-esr and re loaded them, no joy here either.

Scrolling while holding down the Alt key navigates forward/back, check your keyboard's Alt keys. You can disable this behavior by changing mousewheel.with_alt.action to -1 in about:config.

You may have switched on caret browsing. You can toggle caret browsing off/on by pressing F7 (Mac: fn + F7).

  • Settings -> General -> Browsing
    remove checkmark: [ ] "Always use the cursor keys to navigate within pages"

Note that this is a Firefox accessibility feature.

No joy on either offering. In fact today it started out OK then the problem returned with a vengeance.

Have you tried using a different keyboard?

Yes a new mouse and keyboard, no joy. The old mouse and keyboard worked fine until the problem started kind of "out of the blue." Something has changed, Mozilla is constantly changing Firefox, what has changed?

Are there any specific websites where you see this?

Does it still happen in a new profile? An easy way to test a new profile is to install Developer Edition and see if it happens there or refresh your existing profile. Make sure you stay signed out of your sync account when testing.
