I used to be able to turn off my laptop for weeks at a time and when I turned it back on, it would download only the email messages that came in after it was turned on. Now it downloads every message that came during the time it was off even when I have received, opened, responded, deleted them on my desktop PC. This results in thousands of messages on my laptop that have to be deleted. How can I reset this?

You might investigate settings on desktop PC. Is it an IMAP account? If POP, do your settings at tools>account settings>server set to leave messages online?

Greetings, David It is POP. The current setting is "leave messages on server" for 15 days. Does the problem go away if I make it zero days? Does "leave message on server" = leave messages online? If I make it zero days, are there other consequences I should know about? Thanks for your thoughts.

Yes, that is the issue. By leaving online, the messages are there to be downloaded again.

Just uncheck 'leave messages on server'
