When I drag Firefox to Applications it makes a alias. Don't want it on my desktop. How do I get it into applications folder so I can open it?

I am on a MacBook OS 10.5.8 and just downloaded Firefox. Application icon showed up on the desktop. When I tried to put it in the Apps folder, it placed an alias instead of moving and the icon stayed on the desktop.
