AOL Email Account Security says to delete and add Account

says to deleteAOL Email Account Security update says to delete account then add new account by entering Email address and password.I did this and TB found my settings and set up the new account.then is started downloading all messages from aol server , some 12000 of them. at some point when I started deleting them I got a message something caused an error that there were too many deletes and mail client stopped working. when i login I get a message looking for messages and it never finds any. also when I tell it to look for messages it does the same thing. I have rebooted the computer and nothing seems to help.
