I have been using Thunderbird for many years to manage my gmail account. But suddently, since today morning, no mail is being downloaded in spite of the fact that new mails cojntinue to appear on my gmail webpage. When I lanch Thunderbird and/or click on the button to fech my mail, the connection to the gmail account takes place normally and is completed with a "no new messages" sign.

I have not changed any parameter before this happened, though. Can anyone help me so I can continue to manage my mail and folders with Thunderbird?

Thank you in advance. Olivier Da Lage

If you are using ESET/NOD32 security/AV then probability is very high it is causing your problems. According to their forums, you should temporarily disable SSL until they solve the problem per https://support.eset.com/en/kb3126-disable-ssl-filtering-in-eset-windows-products?ref=esf - the problem is being reported by dozens of users https://forum.eset.com/topic/26517-problems-with-thunderbird-and-imaps/ https://forum.eset.com/discover/

Are you using an IMAP account? Test to see if refreshing and resubscribing the folders works.

  • Right click on imap gmail mail account name in Folder Pane and select 'Subscribe'
  • click on 'Refresh'
  • Select all folders and click on 'Subscribe'
  • click on OK

Thanks, but no: I use my gmail account as popmail and therefore, I do not have the options you are mentionning when right-clicking on the gmail mail account in the folder pane... Thanks anyway. Olivier Da Lage

And I am not using ESET antivirus...

Other antivirus apps like Avast are known to block mail in some cases. Or, it might just be the common problem of a corrupted message blocking the download of the others. Open the account on the gmail website, empty Trash and Spam, and delete messages from the Inbox, starting from when the stoppage began, until normal downloading resumes.

As you use POP, it is also highly likely that gmail have decided to deliberately block you. Logon to webmail account and reselect the 'Less secure apps' option. https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en

Thank you for your help.

As I said earlier, I had tried to see if your suggestions could solve the problem but as I use POP and not IMAP, it was not possible to implement them.

Finally, this morning, after 24 hours of blockade and without any action on my part, the gmail messages started downloading again one by one. Now, I made up the backlog and everything seems to be back to normal. Maybe, as was suggested, one big file was blocking the rest before eventually passing, who knows?

In any case, many thanks for your help and patience.

Cheers, Olivier Da Lage

Is the authentication method for the incoming and outgoing servers 'normal password' or OAuth2? It should be OAuth2, to avoid the necessity to set 'less-secure apps'. If you change to OAuth2, check that cookies are allowed in TB Preferences/Privacy & Security, remove passwords from Preferences/Privacy & Security/Passwords/Saved Passwords, restart TB, enter the account password in the OAuth window when prompted.
