As a result of a new VPN, asking that I not use port 25, which was my old SMTP port, I changed it to 26. I could receive emails as normal, but not send them, even after I changed it again to what is listed as the default port, 587.

Probably issues within issues here.

Port 25 is basically dedicated to mail server to server communications. The result is some ISP's block it's use on home connections. Home users they argue do not need to run a server for email, but it is a vector for SPAM.

VPN's in general are becoming popular, but no one told those same ISP's. They generally block access to their mail servers from outside their own network, and even if you are connection using their service, the VPN makes it appear as if you are coming in for just about anywhere. A random location is a common outcome.

So what mail provider are you actually trying to connect to? using their internet service? What VPN?

I'm from Australia, the mail server is iinet, and the VPN is NordVPN.

You cannot simply change the SMTP port, you have to use the settings as per your email provider's instructions. If your email provider requires port 25 for SMTP, and your VPN provider blocks that port, you cannot send email while using the VPN.
