I have lost my Thunderbird password, and on contacting them to resolve the issue I have been asked a whole pile of personal details to prove who I am including photo ID address phone numbers etc In effect everything a hackr could want to know to make your life a misery! i am sure this was not mentioned when i opened my account and I have refused to pass on the details requested. I have several files and information in the account and need to be able to update my TB accont to make sure it is alll running sweetly. Any thoughts of how I can circumvent this would be appreciated.

I have lost my Thunderbird password

Thunderbird itself doesn't need a password. All you can do is to tell Thunderbird to remember your account password. You'll need to talk to your email provider for password recovery options. Neither Thunderbird nor Mozilla are your email provider.

Not sure who you actually contacted, but it certainly was neither Mozilla nor Thunderbird.

I ... need to be able to update my TB accont

There is no such thing as a "Thunderbird account". You've set up an account with an email provider, e.g. Gmail or Yahoo. Then you use Thunderbird to access mail for that account on your email provider's server, as well as to send mail via your email provider's server.

When I open my Thunderbird email I get a window asking me to sign in to my Thunderbird account. I will look into your suggestion and see if th1s will sort it out!

Post a screenshot of this window requesting a signing. As stated above there is no such thing as a Thunderbird account.

Your ISP would have issued you with an email address which you can view emails by logging on to your webmail account via a browser eg: Firefox or Chrome. Try to logon to ISP webmail account via a browser and there is usually a forgotten password link. In these cases, they do not assume you have another email address and may ask questions to verify you are the real owner of that email address. Note: your ISP will already know your phone number

You can also get free email addresses via eg: gmail or if you have a website hosted they will supply email addresses.

If you try to logon via a free or hosted webmail account and have forgotten password, they usually ask for another email address to contact you in the event you have forgotten password.

Thunderbird is an email client program that runs on your computer. You create mail accounts for existing email addresses. This means you can have several email addresses all downloading into one place. I have an ISP email address, a gmail one and a website one. Thunderbird password manager can store passwords so that you do not need to enter them each time.

To create/change/modify passwords, this must be done via your webmail account using a browser. Then you update the one stored in Thunderbird.

re:When I open my Thunderbird email I get a window asking me to sign in to my Thunderbird account. For some reason, the stored password (assuming that option was previously set) is not being used. This would not be for a 'Thunderbird account' - it will be for a mail account - an email address.

See if you have a password stored in Thunderbird. Menu icon > Options > Options > security > 'Passwords' tab click on 'Saved Passwords' click on 'Show Passwords'

If you can see a password: Try to logon to webmail account for email address via a browser using that password.
