The airport icon I need to get online has vanished from the bar. I have to go to Safari, where I can see the icon, get online, close Safari, then go back to Firefox. What a pain! So it appears Firefox is blocking the icon.

Go to the system preferences. Click on "Network". Then click on "Airport". There should be a checkbox that say "Show Airport status in menu bar". It should be checked in order to show the icon at the top.
