I have made firefox my default browser, but at times I would like to use Internet Explorer. Currently when I try to access IE it starts to load then a message comes up saying it has encountered a problem and must close. Not able to resolve.

You should be able to use both browsers simultaneously. You appear to have a problem with either IE or Windows. As this is not a Firefox issue, try asking in a forum that specializes in Windows and IE issues, such as:
