When computers die, the data on them dies too (depending on what is meant by "die"). If you have any access to the old hard drive, you could try to recover the messages from it. Otherwise, you will have to restore the messages from a back-up copy of your data that, one hopes, you made.
If your account was an IMAP account, then the inbox, sent, and deleted folders on the server should still have your data, and you can synch them with Thunderbird.
Apparently, your account was a POP account?
