Cannot Rotate a JPEG Attachment in an E-mail
When I receive an e-mail that has a JPEG attachment (Windows 10 Professional 64-bit), Thunderbird opens the JPEG image with Microsoft Photo Viewer. When the image opens, I cannot rotate the image. If I save the image and then open that saved image via the same Microsoft application, the rotate icon in the upper left is operative. Is this due to the permissions in the image being opened by Thunderbird from alt/local/temp? Thanks.

I often get images which are the wrong way around and it's usually because they have been sent by someone using a phone.
When you take an image with a modern device, the images are stored with pixel (0,0) in the upper left corner, along with what is called "EXIF" data that tells apps loading the image how to display it - the orientation.
When any image is inserted egL "inline," Thunderbird takes the image and displays it "as received", with pixel (0,0) in the upper left, and completely ignores any EXIF rotational data because it is not a graphics product and as yet does not have those capabilities. So you need to resave the image so that it has the pixel (0,0) in the upper left really is top left of image and not reliant on EXIf data to choose some other corner.
I have found that all images opened in Thunderbird are in Appdata> Local>Temp file in a PID folder and the Properties 'Attributes' are always 'read only' enabled. This is a default safety setting imposed by Windows.
You could try unsetting the 'read-only' on the temp folder, but I would expect it to revert. Likely to do with Windows OS Controlled Folder Access. I did locate this similar issue: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-11-folder-keeps-reverting-back-to-read/982dc5db-bb60-4d77-aabe-6094a8e90e1a
I also have located this addon which may be of use: https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-us/thunderbird/addon/attachment-image-viewer/
It seems to offer a 'rotate' option.
Thanks for the reply. I downloaded the file; it has an .xpi filetype. When I tried to install it, Thunderbird would not install it because "it has not been verified".
Also, I went to one e-mail and opened one attachment. It was non-rotatable. I opened Explorer, went to alt\local\temp\pid-<pid#>. and checked the file properties; it was read-only. I changed the properties to remove "read-only", and when I opened it, it was rotatable. It seems to me that since this pid-pid# directory is used only by Thunderbird (except when the user knows what the directory is and goes to it), there is no reason to have this attachment file read-only. If the user opens the file and modifies it, the attachment in the e-mail message is still intact and unchanged. This test was with a photo from a smart phone; I do not know if there are other types of attachments where the file should remain read-only.

You do not open that xpi file. You get Thunderbird to do it.
In Thunderbird
- Menu app icon (3 lines) > Addons and Themes
- Select 'Extensions' - see image below.
- Click on the cog wheel icon and select 'install addon from file'
- Then locate the xpi file in Downloads
- click on 'Open'
- It will auto install.

The file is a read-only because Windows OS Controlled Folder Access states anything in a Temp folder will be auto set as read-only. You have the permission to manually access and alter it, but it's a pain in the proverbial to keep doing this, hence try the addon.
Thunderbird will NOT install the add-on because, as I wrote above, "it has not been verified". I am not sure how an add-on gets "verified".
Open the TB Add-ons & Themes tab, type attachment viewer in the search, Enter, click Add to TB for the first result. It works fine in TB 128.
I installed that add-on, and I am not sure how to use it. I took an e-mail that has an image attachment, and I opened one of the three JPEG images. It opened in the normal application Microsoft Photo Viewer. What do I need to do to have this add-on be involved in opening the attachment? Thanks.
