BUMP: Why does alternate search engine select ("This time, search with...") require extra action?

I wanted to bump this as I never received a satisfactory answer for the reason behavior was changed and it is still something that feels like a UX regression.

I found the design document through a chain of bug reports about some subsequent issue after that change.

It is difficult to answer WHY questions when we weren't involved in the decision.
I found a graphic showing how the new design was intended to work, but I didn't find the discussion behind it.

@jscher2000 Thanks for the quick reply. Where did you get that design doc from? And so fast too. I suppose I could reach out to the designer for comment, but I doubt that would go anywhere. I will resort to a feature request instead.
