I was assured that to speed up firefox without losing bookmarks all I had to do was select "Refresh". I did. After it fiished the refresh my bookmarks had disappeared.

From the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings document:

Note: Your old Firefox profile will be placed on your desktop in a folder named "Old Firefox Data".
