  • Organization: If you'd like to state the organization your address belongs to, enter it in this field, and it will be attached to messages you send from the above address.
  • Signature text: If you'd like to append a signature to your message, enter it here or attach a signature file by check marking Attach the signature from a file instead. For more information, see Signatures.

    • None: The connection is not encrypted.
    • SSL/TLS: (Recommended when possible) The connection is encrypted.
    • STARTTLS: The connection starts as unencrypted, but attempts to make a secure connection if the server supports it.

Server Settings

  • Check for new messages at startup: With this setting enabled, Thunderbird will check the account for new messages when you start Thunderbird.
  • Check for new messages every __ minutes: Make Thunderbird check for new messages automatically on a set time interval.
  • Allow immediate server notifications when new messages arrive: (IMAP accounts only) With this setting, Thunderbird will use the IMAP IDLE command, allowing you to receive new messages as soon as they arrive on the server without having to check the server for new messages.

When I delete a message: (IMAP accounts only) By default, when you delete a message, Thunderbird will move it to the Trash folder for that account. Here, you can change that behavior.

  • Move it to this folder: Instead of moving the message to the trash folder, use this menu to select a different folder where messages will be moved to.
  • Just mark it as deleted: Using this setting will keep the deleted message in the original folder, but strike a line through it to show you it has been marked as deleted. To clear the folder of deleted messages, right-click on the folder and select Compact.
  • Remove it immediately: Choose this setting to make Thunderbird remove messages when you delete them, without moving them to any folder.
  • Automatically download new messages: (POP accounts only) If Thunderbird checks for new messages using the Check for new messages every setting and detects new messages, you will still need to click Get Messages to download those new messages. Enable this setting to automatically download those new messages when they are detected.
  • Fetch headers only: (POP accounts only) With this setting enabled, Thunderbird will only download the message headers. When you want to view a new message, Thunderbird will present a link to download the message content.
  • Leave messages on server: (POP accounts only) Using this setting, Thunderbird will not remove messages from the server after you've downloaded them. Set For at most __ days to delete messages from the server after a set time period. Set Until I delete them to delete messages from the server when you delete them from Thunderbird.

  • Message Store Type: This setting determines if Thunderbird stores mail folders locally in single files (For example, there's a file called Inbox) or stores each message in its own file. For more information, see Maildir in Thunderbird.
NOTE: This setting is determined when creating an account.
