Just installed Thunderbird for the first time, and keep getting message 'Configuration could not be verified'

I've just installed Thunderbird for the first time, on Mac OS 10.12.6. I'm trying to set it up to work with my mac.com email address but I keep getting the message 'Configuration could not be verified – is the user name or password wrong?. I have double and triple checked and I know I have entered my password correctly; it works perfectly for logging into iCloud mail via browser, for example.
