I can't seem to get anywhere with this spell check. Have ticked "as you type" and "spell check" Nothing happens no red line or a check when you press send. The box does appear but with nothing in. I sent a quick message to a friend and when I read it over later Oh dear she would have thought it was from an illiterate person. I will keep searching. Any thoughts.

when typing a message, right click and select language from the menu

Is there actually a discretionary lists there?

Otherwise;

Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
