Thunderbird is not accepting email from my main account. Why?

I receive email in verizon. If verizon pushes the mail over (which verizon says it does), Thunderbird does not recognize or accept it. Hence, I am not receiving any emails in Thunderbird and have not for the past 10 days.

do you get any errors when you pull mail?

There are no error messages. I have checked all the settings, and even spent an hour with Verizon trying everything they knew.(we even tried setting up a whole new account.) Is it conceivable that something in Thunderbird is corrupted and I just need to dump it and start over? I am guessing I would have to save and reload my current files and e-mails to do so.
