Using the font settings in Thunderbird does not seem to be working.
My eyesight5 is pretty bad. I'm trying to make the display fonts quite large (32), but nothing seems to be working. The settings allows me to select a font and set the size from a pull down list, but nothing changes. Presentation and functional operation should be isolated from each other as possible.

There are multiple steps to get it right. Please review this link and do each step: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1462509
steppnav, David has pointed you to good instructions for changing fonts in the bodies of messages.
You may also want to adjust the size and/or the spacing of folder names and message headers in the message table. To do those things, use the View menu > Font size or View > Density.
If the menu bar is not visible, press the <alt> key.
View > Zoom is also a helpful way to enlarge the body of a message. The keyboard shortcuts for enlarging and shrinking the body of a message are also handy: control and the + key or control and the - key. (On a Macintosh, use command instead of control.)
