Hi everyone, I have quite a mess here. Firefox 40.2, Windows 8.

First, the Close, Minimize and Maximize buttons on the top right of my browser windows do not work - they do not even change colour when hovering the cursor over them. ALT+F4 for close doesn't work either, so in order to close my Firefox, I need to right click on the running application and click on "close window".

Second, all "extra" windows which I open, become inactive and keep hanging there. For example, clicking (in the menu) on "help" - "about firefox" produces a window which becomes inactive and just stays there. The same goes for the "download" window - the one which gives me the option to open or to save. Once I click on it anywhere, it becomes inactive and I am controlling the original browser window, as if the inactive one was not there (but it is!).

The problem persists in safe mode. I have tried refreshing the browser, no result. I have re-installed the browser, no result. I have created a new profile, no result either.

I have run Malwarebytes anti-malware, negative results.

Any help is very appretiated, I am lost here. Thank you!

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

Yes, the problem is still there in safe mode.

Is the Firefox window maximized?

If the window is maximized then you can toggle this pref to disable displaying the tabs in the title bar:

  • browser.tabs.drawInTitlebar

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

If you use a non standard windows theme or made other appearance changes then try to revert those changes and try a (different) standard theme or Windows wallpaper.

  • Control Panel > Personalization > Theme & Window Color and Appearance

Thanks for the tips. None of this works, though, the Firefox window still behaves oddly.

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

If you keep having problems then create a new profile.
