When I get a list of links from a search engine, I click on the first link that I think best addresses my search. If it does not, I back page back to the list. However, there is no indication (change of color) in the list that identifies which links have already searched. Plus, the page is shown from the top again and not where I left off. Consequently, I have to page down again. Is there a feature or setting I can activate to make the changes I want?

Try to open that pages in a new tab with a middle-click or change the setting on the Google Search settings page to open links in a new window (tab).
Then you can close the tab to return to the results page instead of using the Back button.
