are you placing them in other address books? or mailing lists stored in other address books which would see them moved to the new address book?

No. Never touched them. Until this happened I never realized that addresses were being synced with gmail.

It looks like I can stop Thunderbird from accessing my gmail account, but I don't see a way of only specifying to to sync contacts. It looks like it stops all syncing including deleting emails.
