I haven't changed anything on either computer prior to or after the update. This happened with the most recent update n BOTH computers. I've gone through the can't send emails guidelines. The only difference I've noted is that I've used smtp.googlemail.com vs smtp.gmail.com. I tried changing to gmail.com and it didn't fix it. Also, my computer has a default port 465 ad the recommendation was 587. Changing that didn't work either.

I'm at the limits of my tech abilities here.

for the Promail account: I don't know why Gmail is set as the Outgoing server (SMTP) for this account. If there is a particular reason, please explain it. I doubt it will work though.

Changing to OAuth2 led me to Google where it didn't recognize my email address and sent to something about cookies which I couldn't figure out. I'm a 73 year-old with limited tech abilities.

My guess it you really are having issues and that they are all caused by your choice of anti virus product. Norton has a very long history of being alarmist (they love flashing red warnings) and routinely blocking new versions of Thunderbird for generally up to a week after the new release. Sometime until the Norton product is reconfigured to actually work with the new version. The following is a fairly generic diagnostic, but it should be enough to get mail if Norton is the culprit.

Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX

Then what?

I checked with Norton. Disabled Auto Protect. Still can't send. Uninstalled Norton. Still cannot send. Issue not resolved.

When suggested to change authentication to OAuth2 it aske for my email address in a format I've not seen before. When I clicked on continue it took me to a support page that talked about:

"Open Chrome | settings | Privacy and Security | Site Settings | Cookies |

	Turn on cookies: Next to “Blocked”, turn on the switch

Turn off cookies: Turn off ALLOW sites to save and read cookies"

I couldn't see those exact terms and it seemed as they were already selected leaving me confused.

I didn't try yet since I had uninstalled Norton whereupon I still couldn't send messages. Are you saying the up date did something to my computer? If it did it did it to both my laptop and desktop.
