What is the cause of unpredictable and frequent crashing?
My firefox is crashing quite frequently and I haven't been able to determine the cause or how to fix it. I've uninstalled and reinstalled, removed all the addons and plugins and updated them, and updated my graphics drivers.
Below is the crash log from my most recent adventure in crashing. If anyone can offer some insight, I would certainly appreciate it!

You have a lot of plugins I don't recognize, such as "Wizvera Mozilla Browser Control (1026)" and "npxwebplugin" (SoftForum XecureWeb Control?). These may be part of a bundle of unknown/unwanted software.
Here's my suggested procedure for tracking down and cleaning up bad add-ons. Sorry for the length -- it's not as bad as it sounds:
(1) Open the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Take out as much trash as possible here.
(2) Open Firefox's Add-ons page using either:
- Ctrl+Shift+a
- "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Plugins. Set nonessential and unrecognized plugins to "Never Activate".
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions.
Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
Any improvement?
(3) You can search for remaining issues with the scanning/cleaning tools listed in our support article: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware. These on-demand scanners are free and take considerable time to run. If they finish quickly and especially if they require payment, you may have a serious infection. I suggest the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.
Success?
Also... when Firefox crashes, it usually records information about what was happening at that moment and displays the Mozilla Crash Reporter. If you are getting a blue screen or if you get the Windows crash dialog instead, the following might not yield anything, but it's still worth a look.
You can share crash reports with forum volunteers to see whether they point to the solution. Please check the support article "Firefox Crashes" (especially the last section) for steps to get those crash report IDs, and then post some of the recent ones here.
Note: If the report IDs do not start with bp- then please click the IDs to make sure they are submitted to the crash stats server. If they are submitted but do not change to bp- codes, you can copy the URL from the address bar instead.
If Firefox isn't stable enough to use about:crashes, try starting Firefox in its Safe Mode. Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. A small dialog should appear. Click the "Start in Safe Mode" button (not Reset/Refresh).
Hi there jscher,
Thanks for taking the time to offer some advice on my problem, I very much appreciate it. I tried the steps that you suggested, but unfortunately with no luck. They were excellent suggestions, and it was good that I get around to removing those old bits of software (I had a lot of it hanging around from web security applets required for Korean websites) that are no longer needed.
Unfortunately, despite following your advice to a T - removing programs, addons, plugins, and extensions, I still get crashes. I've tried to soldier on and ignore them, but I confess I am tempted just to switch browsers. I thought first, however, I would come back and respond and see if I could get any help from posting the crash logs that you mentioned.
Here are three of my recent crash logs: https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/bp-2f049843-50e6-4aa6-9425-24bcd2150311

I do hope these might be of some help to any of the kind volunteers here, as I am entirely at a loss for how to proceed.
Thank you for your help!
Could you try browsing in Firefox's Safe Mode for an hour? It seems that your crashes are so frequent that if Firefox runs normally for an hour, that would be a good sign that one of the differences between Safe Mode and normal mode is involved in the problem.
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
- "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
- Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run
After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).
Any difference?
In case your Firefox program files got damaged, you could try the following type of reinstall that does not touch your settings files. Important: do NOT uninstall Firefox first. That is not needed.
Clean Reinstall
(1) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 36.0.1 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)
(2) Exit out of Firefox.
(3) Rename the program folder
(64-bit Windows folder names)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
to
C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox
(32-bit Windows folder names)
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
to
C:\Program Files\OldFirefox
(4) Run the installer you downloaded in #1. It should automatically connect to your existing settings.
Any improvement?
Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:
- \OldFirefox\Plugins
- \OldFirefox\browser\plugins
The crash report flagged these programs;
atidxx32.dll = Advanced Micro Devices

Hi again jscher2000,
Thanks for your quick and thought-out response, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me.
Unfortunately the problem persists. I took your advice of running Firefox in safe mode, and still experienced the periodic crashes there. Then I took your advice of the clean reinstall, and still found myself facing the crashes.
I have a suspicion that it may be related to flash, but I'm not sure why or how to deal with it.
I have linked here more recent crash logs, in case they might be of any assistance to you in kindly helping me to deal with this frustration.

Thank you again for all your help, it's very much appreciated.
hi , due to the wide range of error signatures, i would speculate that your hardware might be involved in the issue. can you test the integrity of your RAM with a tool like www.memtest.org ?
One crash report flagged these programs;
quartz.dll = Microsoft
atidxx32.dll = Advanced Micro Devices
Another flagged;
shell32.dll = Windows Shell API functions
quartz.dll = Microsoft
atidxx32.dll = Advanced Micro Devices
wininet.dll = Internet Extensions for Win32

Thank you everyone for all of your attention and advice! I think that FredMcD may have hit on something. Running sfc /scannow within Windows returns a number of errors that it says that it can't repair.
So this opens a new avenue for a potential solution to seek, though I have no idea what sort of rabbit hole I am going down with this. I realize it's outside of the field of Firefox-only problems and support, but would anyone have any resources they could suggest I look at? Perhaps something to help with repairing through a Windows CD?
Thanks again, everyone, particularly those who keep replying and helping. I really do appreciate it.
