In order to reduce the number of messages on my Android Phone Gmail inbox I moved them to local folders on Thunderbird on my netbook thinking sychronising would take them off the phone since the destination folders do not exist there. However, they stay put. Any suggestions?

have you compacted the folders in Thunderbird? File menu (Alt+F) > Compact folders
