FF 17.0.1 keeps closing tabs when I hit the back button

This only started after the last update. I haven't added anything i.e. addons, etc. since then. There is evidently a crossed code somewhere between the back button and tabs. Sometimes, when I click the back button, the tab I'm on closes. It seems to be particularly bad when I do a Google search, click a link, then try to get back to the search results. Most annoying when a good half of my word day is spent searching on Google.

Any fixes for this?

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

I have no desire to lose all my extensions, so I won't do the reset. I've already tried the safe mode thing, and it still happens.

It's not my extensions or add-ons, it's FF. I don't know why people here are so hesitant to admit that FF has flaws, and just want to blame everything on extensions and add-ons.

I went back to the previous version before the last update, and the problem has stopped, so obviously, a glitch in the latest version. I've turned off automatic updates and will only update when I am sure a version is stable from now on. All this rapid updating is causing more problems than it is saving.

Plus, I have another related problem. Sometimes the tab disappears AND takes all the toolbars with it. F11 hardly ever works to get them back, and I end up having to go into task manager to close FF down.

This has been happening ever since v. 17 came out. It just happened again, so I'm going to go back to 16 now, or go back to using the portable version, which seems a lot more stable.

I really love FF. I've tried chrome (well, Iron) and a lot of others, but keep coming back. I just wish it wasn't so glitchy.

Did you really made sure that his isn't caused by an extension?

Could that be caused by a corrupted localstore.rdf file? It is not much trouble to test that, anyway. Move the localstore.rdf file out of the profile, restart Firefox and see if the problem is still there. If it is, you can move that file back where it was. If not, you will have to redo all the toolbar and window size customizations that you had.
