Using my banking institution account number and password I can log into on-line banking. Once in the secure banking site if I try to transfer money I need to re-enter my password to confirm the transfer but I get a message that my password is wrong. If I use IE I do not have the problem. The banking institution advises their system is set up for IE and Firefox and the problem is at my end. This problem only started a few weeks ago. Firefox is set up to not remember passwords and the cookie history has been cleared.

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Also make sure that your security software isn't blocking the password.

Cleared the cache. Started Firefox in safe mode and while in safe mode managed to log into secure banking and then make a transfer (accepted password for the transfer). Restarted Firefox in normal mode and it allowed me to log in but it would not accept password when I tried to make a transfer. I only get three attempts to enter correct password before being locked out which necessitates contacting the banking institution to have password reset. Now each time I try to log into secure banking site I momentarily see a log in screen (account number and password) flash up before getting another home page with a button to go to the internet banking site.

If clearing cookies doesn't work then it is possible that the cookies.sqlite file that stores the cookies is corrupted. Rename (or delete) cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete other present cookie files like cookies.sqlite-journal in the Firefox Profile Folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder

You can remove all stored data from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry (Show All History or History sidebar) and on the about:permissions page (via the location bar).

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove everything like bookmarks, cookies, passwords, cache, history, and exceptions from that domain, so be cautious and if you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make a note of those passwords and bookmarks. You can't recover from that "forget" unless you have a backup of the affected files.

It doesn't have any lasting effect, so if you revisit such a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.

Cleared cookies again and renamed cookies.sqlite to cookies.sqlite.old. Could not find any files that looked like cookies.sqlite.journal. Tried the Forget About This Site suggestion but I still have the issue of being able to log into secure banking but from there, whenever I re-enter my password to make a money transfer I get a message that my password is wrong. Would it be easier to just uninstall Firefox and reinstall it? I am going away for three weeks so I will be able to test any further suggestions on this PC until I get back. Thanks for assistance so far.
