why does Firefox cover the whole screen when it hangs? it covers the bottom row of icons which I use to switch to a different task while I'm waiting for Firefox to finish hanging.

I do occasionally see "not responding" at the top of the window. Is that the kind of hang you're getting, or something else?
I can't recall what happens with the Taskbar, but you should be able to change windows using either:
- Alt+Tab, keeping Alt held down until an overlay appears, then tabbing to the desired window
- Windows key+ Tab, to click-to-switch on the current and any other desktops
