Where is this search bar positioned?

Do you have the bookmarks sidebar open?

more options

With the Bookmarks Sidebar open when I close Firefox, the Bookmarks Sidebar will be open the next time Firefox is launched with the 'focus' being in the Bookmarks Sidebar "search " field - thus the flashing cursor there.

Are you referring to the Search Bar that is on the about:home default Home Page? Whichever search engine is selected as the Default is what is used for searches in that Search Bar - not strictly Google.

That is the manner in which Mozilla made the new Sidebar feature work - the "focus" is in the open Sidebar search field, whether it is Bookmarks or History or Synced Tabs that were showing when Firefox was last closed and any of those 3 were being displayed.

It would probably require an extension to shift the focus away from the open Sidebar search field.

In fact everyone is suffering this looking at various posts. best ask how do we go back a version !

its defaulting to the search box sitting just above the bookmarks list see image attached. Please firefox this is crazy it should never have been released ! Doesnt anybody test things ? How long are we suffering this, my yellow folders are also gone replaced with grey. Anyone care to say how long this has existed, was it 56 that did it and when did 56 get installed ?

You can also try the current beta version where this is possibly fixed. When I open the about:home page in Beta and have the sidebar open then I have the cursor in the search bar on the about:home page. I get the cursor in the location bar if I set the startup page to a blank page. otherwise i need to press F6 once or twice to set focus to the location bar.

The 'blinking cursor' issue in the sidebar issue should be fixed in the next Firefox version (<strike>56</strike> 57, currently Beta). The issue with gray folders in the sidebar is part of the new design to speedup Firefox and minimized the memory usage as much as possible. This has made a lot of compressed PNG images getting replaced by gray SVG images.

You can look at this thread for a solution to color the gray SVG images using a fill property in userChrome.css.

cor-el http://design.firefox.com/photon/welcome.html shows the facial facelift, to go with modern OS's it says, as I hate win8 touch screen and clutter of IE, the clean page of firefox with just google search bar was why I went with Firefox, I am reluctant to lose all that to this graphically intensive new face, looks like firefox is meddling again. No fix to this issue then, what a pain. So I guess we are stuck with an inability to launch and type, someone is meddling and fixing what doesnt need fixing. Just a simple bugfix will do thank you Mozilla.

Can all that clutter be turned off ?

In Firefox 57, the new activity stream appears by default on the new tab page (about:newtab) and the built-in home page (about:home). You can:

(1) streamline the categories and/or revert the new tab page to its recent design

(2) revert about:home to its recent design or just assign your own home page instead

Hi biebie, thank you for the screenshots.

I don't know how much you use the bookmarks sidebar vs. the Google search box, so this may or may not be a reasonable suggestion for you:

As a workaround, you can close the Bookmarks Sidebar (on Windows, Ctrl+b) to move the cursor back into the Google search box. If you need the sidebar again, Ctrl+b will open it (unless the focus is in a page that intercepts Ctrl+b).

new update 56.0.1 still not working why is firefox not helping what is the use for the blinking cursor on the bookmarks side

Hi biebie, this behavior will change in Firefox 57 (mid-November). This is not expected to be fixed in Firefox 56.x.
