The Firefox new tab page can display a Web Search, Shortcuts to your most visited sites, Recommended stories, and other information described on this page. You can customize these features by following the instructions below.

Change what's on your new tab page
To turn new tab page features on or off, click the gear icon on the top or bottom corner of the page. A panel will open, showing available features in your region. Click the toggle next to a feature to switch it on
or off

More settings are available by clicking on the Manage more settings link at the bottom of the panel.
Wallpapers
Firefox allows you to customize your new tab page with a selection of wallpapers, giving your browser a fresh look that suits your style. Choose from sleek solid colors, artistic abstract designs, and captivating photographs, or upload your own image.
Choose your wallpaper
- In the top or bottom corner of the new tab page, click the gear icon.
- In the customization panel, under the Wallpapers section, you will see different categories like Solid colors, Abstract, Celestial and Photographs. Click the category you prefer. For example, selecting Abstract will show a variety of abstract designs.
- Click a wallpaper from the selected category to preview it. The wallpaper will be applied immediately as you select it. For example, if you choose a wallpaper from the Abstract category, it will be displayed as the background on your new tab page.
- After selecting your desired wallpaper, in the top of the panel, click next to the wallpaper category name to return to the customization panel.
- Click to close the panel.
Now, whenever you open a new tab, your selected wallpaper will be displayed, giving your Firefox a personalized touch.
Reset wallpaper to default
To reset to your default background on the new tab page:
- In the top or bottom corner of the new tab page, click the gear
icon.
- In the customization panel, under the Wallpapers section, click Reset to Default.
- Click Close at the top right to exit the customization panel.
Customize your wallpaper with your own image
To set your new tab wallpaper to an image of your own:
- In the top or bottom corner of the new tab page, click the gear
icon.
- In the customization panel, under the Wallpapers section, click Upload an image.
- Using your operating system’s browse and image selection, select the image and click Open.
- The image will now be in place as the wallpaper in your new tab.
Note that these images are not uploaded to Mozilla, but are kept locally on your computer.
Customize your wallpaper with a custom color
To set your new tab wallpaper to a custom color of your own:
- In the top or bottom corner of the new tab page, click the gear
icon.
- In the customization panel, under the Wallpapers section, click Solid colors, and then Choose a color.
- Using your operating system’s color picker, select a color. Close the color picker.
- The color will now be in place as the wallpaper in your new tab.
Weather
The Firefox new tab page displays your local weather, providing quick updates directly in your browser. This feature is available in specific regions, including the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, India, and Japan; other locations will be added over time. You can customize the weather display to match your preferences.
Change the location
- At the top of the new tab page, hover over the weather information and click the three-dot menu.
- Click Change Location.
- Enter the new location in the field, then select from the drop-down.
Change the temperature unit
- At the top of the new tab page, hover over the weather information and click the three-dot menu.
- Select the option to switch the temperature unit (Celsius or Fahrenheit).
Change the weather display
- At the top of the new tab page, hover over the weather information and click the three-dot menu .
- Select the option to switch to your preferred display (simple view or detailed view).

Where are these weather conditions from?
The weather conditions on the Firefox New Tab page are sourced from AccuWeather.
How is my location determined?
To see weather conditions for your location, Firefox uses your IP address to determine your approximate location. This information is then used to provide relevant weather conditions for your area.
Do you share my IP address?
When the weather feature is enabled, Firefox doesn’t share your IP address or any personally identifiable information (PII) outside Mozilla servers.
Does this feature use my location or other information if it’s disabled?
No, if the weather feature on new tab is disabled, the related weather services and APIs are also disabled and no information is used.
Why do I see “Sponsored” next to AccuWeather – what does this mean?
Firefox may receive revenue if you visit the AccuWeather website to see a more detailed weather forecast.

Shortcuts
Your Shortcuts are the sites you visit most and the sites that you choose to Pin for easy access. These sites will also appear when you click the address bar to start a search.
Add a Shortcut
If you have an empty tile:
- Click the empty tile labeled Add Shortcut.
- Type in a title and URL (web address) for the site, add a custom image to appear on the Shortcut if you’d like, then click Add.
- A tile with the icon of the site, or the custom image you added, will appear in your Shortcuts.
If you don't have an empty tile:
You can edit an existing Shortcut to show a new title and URL.
- Hover the mouse pointer over an existing Shortcut that you no longer need.
- Click the three-dot menu that appears in the upper right corner of the Shortcut, and choose Edit.
- In the Edit Shortcut dialog that opens, enter a new title and URL, add a custom image if you’d like, and click Save.
Pin, unpin, or remove a Shortcut
To pin a Shortcut (make it stay):
Hover over the tile until the menu (three dots) appears.
- Click .
- A pin icon will show up on your pinned Shortcut.
To unpin a Shortcut:
Hover over the tile until the menu (three dots) appears.
- Click .
To remove a Shortcut:
Hover over the tile until the menu (three dots) appears.
- Click .
To edit a Shortcut:
Hover over the tile until the menu (three dots) appears.
- Click .
- Change the Title or add a custom image.
Rearrange Shortcuts
Click and hold on a tile, and drag it to another spot.
Show more or fewer Shortcuts
- In the top right corner of your New Tab page, click the gear
icon
.
- Under Shortcuts, select the number of Shortcut rows you want to see from the drop-down menu.
Recommended stories
The Recommended stories section displays content curated by Firefox’s recommendations team with the help of custom machine learning tools. These stories are not informed by your browsing data. You can view or bookmark stories, remove them, or open them in a new window.
Recommended stories on the Firefox new tab page is a feature currently available in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, Spain, and India. We’re working to bring it to other countries.
Bookmark a recommended story
Hover over the article until the menu (three dots) appears.
- Hover over the article until the three-dot menu appears.
- Click in the menu and a prompt will ask you to give your bookmark a name and tags.
- Click when you're finished.
Remove a recommended story
Hover over the article until the menu (three dots) appears.
- Hover over the article until the three-dot menu appears.
- Click the menu and then click Dismiss to remove it from your recommended stories.

Recent Activity
Recent Activity displays recent downloads, sites you've recently visited, bookmarked. Firefox will show in each tile a download icon, the bookmark
star, or the recent visit clock
icon.
Open a file or its folder, bookmark a site from the Recent Activity section
- Hover over the top right corner of a tile until the menu
appears.
- Click the menu, and choose the action you wish to take.
Open a site from the Recent Activity section in a new window
- Hover over the top right corner of a tile until the menu
appears.
- Click , or if you don't want it to be saved in your browsing history.
Remove a site from the Recent Activity section
- Hover over the tile until the menu
appears.
- Click the menu, then click
You can also click to remove highlighted pages from your browsing history. to remove it from the Recent Activity section.
Change your new tab page to Blank
The new tab page opens by default each time you open a new tab. If you prefer a blank page when opening new tabs:
- Click the gear icon on the top or bottom corner of the new tab page.
- Click Manage more settings at the bottom of the panel.
- Under New Windows and Tabs, select Blank Page from the New tabs drop-down menu.
