Address book does not retain changes in properties

This has been going on for years. Someone will change their email. So I go to my address book, and change the properties for that individual. Then I click OK. The entry in the address book changes.

But, once I close and re-open TBird, the change is gone and the email has reverted to the old entry.

The same thing happens when I delete the old entry and create a new one.

This has happened over and over through various versions. Right now I have 24.4.0

Is there some not-so-obvious way to make a change in addresses stick.
