Whenever I open a larger .gif image file hosted online, Firefox will lag, stop responding, then Windows error box pops up and I have to select "close this program" to exit Firefox.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox (you need to close and restart Firefox).

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Neither of these solutions work for me. I'm suspecting it's a Firefox problem.

This is still a problem!!!!!! Very annoying since I frequent reddit, where a sizable portion of posts are gifs that will crash Firefox when I open them!

I solved this by upgrading to Firefox 27 beta. It's supposed to release this month anyway!

Note that installing a beta version will put you on the Beta update channel.
r Firefox 27.0 should be released next Tuesday (Feb 4), so do not forget to install the official release or you will keep receiving updates twice a week (Tuesday and Friday).
