what does it mean when I get a string of boxes with 4 characters, combos of letters and or numbers in place of one digit.

Hi Alicia, a tall-ish box with two lines of characters (0-9, A-F) indicates that Firefox was not able to display the correct character in the font it was using.
Where on the page are you seeing the problem? In Windows 7, I'm not seeing any font problems. Then again, I don't read Chinese...
Windows XP doesn't have by default installed support for East Asian an complex script languages.
Check that you have installed East Asian language support.
