why when I select a webpage from a search page it opens then switches back to the search page.

There are three prefs, accessible via the about:config page, to control the focus if you click a link.

  • browser.tabs.loadInBackground (normal links)
  • browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground (javascript)
  • browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground

Also, if the page you are opening contains Flash media, it could be a bug in the Flash player protected mode that affects Windows 7. More info and workarounds in this thread: Opening New Windows and Shockwave Flash.
