New Tab shows black page not thumbnails. How do I get it to show the thumbnails?

Clicking the + for a new tab just gives me a black page with a Google search box at the top. The only instructions I can find for restoring the thumbnails of my top sites say to click on one of the blank boxes, but since I have no boxes at all, this doesn't help. Can someone direct me on what I should do? Thank you.

Could you test something: if you type or paste about:newtab in the url bar and press Enter, do you get the page with nine thumbnails?

If that works, an add-on may have replaced this page with its own page. Do you have any tab or search-related add-ons that you might be able to reconfigure, disabled or remove? You could check both Plugins and Extensions here:

The thumbnails on the about:newtab page are generated from the cache, so if the page is not in the cache or otherwise can't be rendered as a PNG image then you will get an empty box.
Do not use Clear Recent History to clear data when you close Firefox.
If there is no history then you get an about:newtab page with empty boxes.

Thank you for your help.

"About:newtab" resulted in the same black page with the Google search box. I went into "Tools: Extensions" and disabled and then deleted FoxTabs, which used to produce a similar thumbnail page for a new tab but which hadn't worked since a Flash update several months ago. After that, "about:newtab" resulted in a "You have opened a new tab" page. When I ticked the "do not show this message again" box, the thumbnail page appeared the next time I clicked the plus sign for a new tab. Hooray! I really appreciate your help.

Sounds that you open the about:home page instead of the about:newtab page in a new tab.

You can check the browser.newtab.url pref on the about:config page.
