Why do downloads crash seconds before completion? It's not a joke anymore, I waste hours...
For the past week the downloads (without any download manager) have been crashing seconds before completion. On third or fourth try they will complete. It's an incredible waste of time. The system hasn't changed, everything is the same, but the problem persists. Also, most web pages do not load the first time (or load incompletely), I have to 'reload' several times. Please help!

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.
Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode?

Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."
If not, see this:

Thank you for your suggestions! I have been puttering blindly last night and found that if I disable virus scanning (in Firefox) at the end of the download everything completes (I use Avast!). The question remains as to why it started doing it now and didn't before. The other problem of pages not loading first time remains (even the Firefox help page).... Again, many thanks for your advice!
the-edmeister, thank you for your suggestion. It appears that the problem lies somewhere with the anti-virus scanning of downloaded files, although the incomplete pages problem remains...
