The proxy server is refusing connections

The knowledge base article assumes that this file is either marked read-only or is corrupted. Neither seems to be the case in my problem. I first tried to start Firefox in safe mode (same result). I then attempted to rename prefs.js to prefsold.js to see what Firefox would generate, and sure enough it generated exactly the same proxy error. I then edited prefs.js using Notepad plus/plus (it has a Javascript setting - and keep in mind I'm not a JS programmer), located 3 or 4 lines that had the same Proxy address as I found in the network settings, and removed them. I then restarted Firefox - and the proxy error repeated yet again.

The logical assumption therefore is that the proxy setting is being picked up and rewritten from some point other than prefs.js. Is there a configuration file of some kind that Firefox is using to insert this data when a profile is being generated?

This problem has been reported a few times by me, without any resolution or assistance. Surely I'm not the only one having moved from a dialup and experienced this irritating issue. Thanks

Look for the presence of a user.js file in your Profile folder (it's an optional file that doesn't exist until the user creates it or a program installation creates it). Any setting or preference in the user.js file will re-write the prefs.js file on startup of Firefox. http://kb.mozillazine.org/User.js_file
