Why do some searches never stop and never find things when they should?

I recently upgraded my 12+ GB database from 60.9.1 to 91.6 and have noticed that the search code does not appear to have changed. For years I have done searches that never stop....

Here is an example, I know I bought something on 2 Nov 2019 but can't find the receipt in my emails which has many layers of subfolders. Here's a simple search to find all emails on that date but it never stops and never finds anything - I have other emails on that date - I grabbed this screenshot after it was running for 30 minutes:

I don't know why Search is slow for you. May be because the search is actually carried out on the server, and not locally. But this is just a guess.

Why don't you take a look at Global Search? https://support.mozilla.org/kb/global-search

Thanks for engaging. There is no server involved here. Always local. I have used Find | Search messages for many years and generally have been very disappointed it does not find things that are there.

The global search is new to me. The help pages says "Global search is enabled by default" and I checked mine is, but when I try a simple search which should have found the recent forum notification emails I get no matches. See screenshot (upload would not work): https://snipboard.io/ao8BLF.jpg

Check your settings whether it's really turned on. At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button > Preferences > General > Indexing

Make sure 'Enable Global Search and Indexer' is checked.

Yes, I did not change the default https://snipboard.io/C4FSip.jpg

I saw your post in my other thread, it was probably meant for here. My Thunderbird profile is on my c drive and testing "Mozilla" in the search now it work too! It must have been taking ages to reindex or something as global-messages-db.sqlite has grown to 72k now. :-)

I can't see how to find messages sent on a certain date with the new search.

Why is the old search kept?

Why is the old search kept?

Why not? Folder search has search options not offer by the other types of search.

The new search is good but I would still like to know why the original search never finds things / stops in my profile like searching for an email on a certain date....
