Please help! My capacity is now in red showing 96%. I've tried everything to remove emails from the server: putting emails in the trash...emptying trash...compacting folders...closing and re-opening Thunderbird.

And in the process of doing all that - the program keeps downloading messages in All Mail. Right now it's downloading message 4190 of 100,506 in All Mail - even though my All Mail account total in the left hand column only shows 23,276 total messages.

I have two accounts - one is a POP server which appears to be left over from a previous email provider. 3-4 years ago I moved over to G Mail and that account is a IMAP server.

Two questions: If I entirely delete the POP server account, will that help free up server space and get me out of the red zone? Second, how do I get the program to stop downloading all the time?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Steve

lets get this in perspective.

Only your gmail account affects you mail storage in gmail. But you might want to look at your other storages on Google. They combine mail photos and files into a single space allocation, so your issue may not be email.

You will find information on this here http://support.google.com/mail/thread/13739428/my-email-over-quota-not-receiving-email-and-all-my-accounts-are-connected-with-this-email?hl=en&msgid=13740001

Now back to Thunderbird.

Personally I suggest you simply unsubscribe from all mail. Right click on the account in the folder pane and select subscribe from the menu. The google all mail folder is not really a good fit for an IMAP client as it is basically all your mail on google which they use labels on to place in folders. What you end up with with all mail is two ;local copies of each email.

The downloads will end when your mail is synchronized with the server. After all that is what IMAP is, a synchronized mail account that duplicates everything on the server, so your phone and tablet and desktop all see the same things.
