If you got a search result hit, then by definition, no question, you MUST have global-messages-db.sqlite file SOMEWHERE on your system. If it did not exist, then you would not have gotten any hits. And in fact, you wouldn't even be presented with a search field, as seen in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/global-search
On the infinitesimal chance that the file does not exist and you get results like you describe, then if you put in a string like zzzzzzzzzzzzzz that doesn't exist in your mail it should return a message hit but then clicking to access the "found" message fails, no?

Try to rebuild the global database. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/rebuilding-global-database
According to help, I am to delete this file
global-messages-db.sqlite.
a search of my entire hard drive finds no such file.
It's in your profile and it's hidden by default. You may need to make hidden files visible.
the "show hidden files option" was already checked.
Zenos posted a link to a support article above. The article will help you to locate your profile folder. The file global-messages-db.sqlite is in your profile folder.
The file: global-messages-db.sqlite does not exist anywhere on my C: drive
No one said it must be on your C:\ drive. It's in the Thunderbird profile. Where the profile is located I don't know.
The C: drive is the only active drive on my computer. I found the profile; the file is not there. I then searched the entire drive; the file is not there.
Then may be you're talking about something different than Global Search? Please clarify. If you do have Global Search turned on, then there will be a file global-messages-db.sqlite in your profile.
How many times do I have to write this:
global-messages-db.sqlite
Does not exist on my hard drive. It is not in the profile or anywhere else!!!!!
