I have many tasks set up with important information that I'd like to back up. I have exported my calendar hoping that would include tasks, but when I open that file I can't see anything recognisable as a task. How can I export tasks from Thunderbird?

If it's a back up, then its value is in being able to restore the data in the event of an accident. So the important thing is that if you restore from this backup, do your events or tasks re-appear?

Many backups are by their very nature unsuitable for direct inspection.

Thanks, I get that the back-up wasn't designed for human readability. Is there any way to export ther tasks in a readable form (eg a spreadsheet, csv word doc etc). Does anyone know the data structiure within the calander that contains the tasks so that they could be accessed programatically?
