How is het possible when creating a mail to underscribe a word or a letter and how can i change for a while the lettertype to bold?

Maybe you don't have any toolbars or menus visible?

Make sure you are writing in HTML.
- 'Tools' > 'Account Settings' > 'Composition & Addressing' for the mail account
- select: 'Compose mesages in HTML format'
- click on OK to save changes.
when you open a new Write message, there should be a 'Formatting bar'. If you cannot see this: 'View' > 'Toolbars' > 'Formatting Bar'
to underline:
- type the word
- double click on word to highlight
- in the Formatting Bar, click on the A icon that has an underline.
to make a word bold: do the same but this time select the bold A icon.
You can select the icon first and then type, but then you need to click again on that icon to stop.
Bedankt voor het antwoord. De in het Engels in het antwoord weergegeven begrippen zoals bijvoorbeeld Tools - account setting - composition an adressing en ook Formatting Bar en View Toolbars - Formatting Bar kan ik totaal niet in mijn Nederlands talig e-mailprogramma vinden. Ik kan dus helaas nog steeds niet in een op te stellen nieuwe e-mail woorden vet, of onderstreept of cursief weergeven. Wie kan mij - ik heb niet zo veel pc kennis - duidelijk helpen?

You need to be able to see this formatting toolbar. (see attached image)
You need to enable it in the account settings, as Toad Hall described, or use shift when clicking on Write to toggle temporarily to HTML mode.
Don't worry about the "Source (HTML)" tab in my screenshot; that is added by the Stationery add-on and won't appear in a regular installation of Thunderbird.
You can also do some simple text formatting that usually works in other email clients:
*bold* would appear as *bold* /italic/ would appear as /italic/ _underlined_ would appear as underlined
