I know this must seem like a pretty novice question, but I need to ask it. I have installed several dictionaries: 1. OpenMedSpell, 2. Spellbound, & 3. US English Dictionary. How do I know when these are being used? For example, when I type something (I assume it needs to be in something on Firefox) for the medical/physiology reviews, I do not know if the OpenMedSpell auto. works or do I need to bring it out from somewhere and do something to make sure it will check what I type. The same with the dictionary. How do I find where the dictionary is. Not the one that came with the MacBook Pro but the US English Dictionary I downloaded.

I appreciate any help in this area because I keep them updated but I do not know how to use them or are the "engaged" automatically?

Thanks Tons!

Hi Kooler, Don't worry, there is nothing like a novice question - we all have to learn step-by-step :)

Now, I understand that your problem is that even though you have installed several add-ons that provide dictionaries, you do not know how to activate a particular dictionary, right?

It's simple. Right click in the text box that you are typing. In the menu that pops up, you will see an entry called "Languages". Under this entry, your installed dictionaries would be shown. The dictionary with the 'check' mark is your currently active dictionary. Just click on any other dictionary (say, OpenMedSpel) to make it active.

Hope that helps ! And keep all your questions coming. We would be happy to help !

You can find "US English" and "OpenMedSpell" by right clicking any text field and selecting "Check spelling" then selecting active dictionary under "Languages".

See How do I use the Firefox spell checker? for details.

Note: Spellbound has lots of bad reviews, it is suggested it is a malware, you'd better uninstall it. See Disable or remove Add-ons

dynamite & Patryx - I did do some reading about these ad-ons and asked in the Apple Forum and I did not hear anything negative about any of them. I have been using Spellbound for years, probably about 15 (if that is possible, but only 5 years on a Mac). Personally, I did not notice any problems. I had noticed that it did a fair job of identifying misspelled words. Oh, well, it is gone.

As far as typing and then right clicking the section I want to check both with the installed spell checker now (Spellbound is gone and if it is a medical article, also OpenMedSpell). I do get "check spelling" that has a check mark by it. (Is that the spell checker for the entire computer now that Spellbound is gone? I do not see OpenMedSpell, and I should have mentioned this in my initial post. My problem seems to be a bit more complicated. I assumed that when I right clicked in the text area and clicked "check spelling" it would automatically use Spellbpund. However, even with Spellbound gone, when I right click there are recommendations at the very top of that right click list (along with check spelling that is checked but no OpenMedSpell beyond the "check spelling" As far as repeating the spell checking, I could not find how to use OpenMedSpell.

I do a regular check for updates but the majority of my Plug-ins would not have any info about updates and the "research" would not deliver any additional help. I thought maybe this was tied in to the updates for the spell checkers, but most likely not. I realized they have their own update box, but I still thought maybe not knowing if the majority of my Plug-ins have updates, that this would "weaken" the spell checkers. Most likely these are separate issues, now that I think about it.

Thank you both for this info. Any info on what dictionary Firefox uses if a general dictionary is not installed would be helpful? I looked under Dictionaries and see there are 2 for "English (US). One is about twice the size as the other one, but I do not find any information on what dictionaries one would be downloading.
