large email database search hangs

I have a lot of emails stored in different local folders. My search now hang. They go so far than just hang. Is there a way to rebuild the complete indexing for my thunderbird install?

Here is an article on using the profile manager: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-thunderbird-profiles#w_starting-the-profile-manager

You could, with thunderbird closed, access the profile itself and do a copy/paste to duplicate it an then rename the new one. Then, use the profile manager to log into the duplicate one and then click help>troubleshootinginformation, scroll to 'profile folder' and click 'about:profiles' and select the original one. Doing this gives you two profiles.

Now, in one profile, you could delete some accounts and in the other profile, delete opposite accounts. BUT, I encourage you to rethink everything before doing this. If your problem is large POP files, you could easily create new Local Folders to reduce that. And use archive folders where possible. And always do frequent backups.

you could delete the global database in the profile, after shutting thunderbird down, and then restarting

Well, I messed up badly and deleted everything because I failed to follow the step by step. So let me ask again, (since I can no longer find the step by step). How do you delete the global database in the profile?

  1. click help>troubleshootinginformation
  2. scroll to 'profile folder' and click 'open folder'
  3. you are now in the profile, Exit Thunderbird
  4. look for the file, global-messages-db.sqlite and delete it . That's it.

I think my email system is just too big. I am still hanging when doing a search. Seems to hang farther down now, but still hands. I have deleted many large emails, but now I want to take a different tact to see if I can solve it. So here is the plan: Have two thunderbird systems, one for each business. Can I do that? Run one, saving the files I need for later on that system, then run the other for the other business, making sure I only save files in the right system. Can I do that? If so, I assume I need two different profiles with complete file systems. Is it possible to do this?

Yes, you can do that. You can have a different profile for each segment of the business and can easily switch back and forth between them. I also suggest reviewing what content could be local, not on a web server. Further, I encourage regular backups. And, since this is a business, I encourage NOT updating Thunderbird automatically, but only after you believe updates are stable.

I only have a small amount of files on my imap server. How do I make two profiles? Do I make two profile directories, both with my Imap and then only the local files I need for each, then start up pointing to them separately? Is it possible to have separate icons? Sorry, at age 75, this can be not as simple (or fool proof) as I may need. Is there an article on how to do the 2 instance scenario? All my local files are on a desktop. Thank you for your patience and help. JoeR

You are GREAT! Thank you. Using profile manager as my start point to two separate instances.
