Not sure when or why but I noticed a few weeks back that when I do a web search using the "images" tab in search mode, no images are ever found. I am in 'safe search" mode, but I also have been for years before and this was not happening.

Unfortunately I am not tech savvy enough to know what is what, so let me see if I can clarify the problem for you a bit. In the past when I enter the information I want to search for in the "search or address" field it would populate a list with the various category tabs at the top (Web, Images, Videos, News). When I would click "images" it would change from the pages of list of web links to pages of images. Now, when I select "images" the page that comes up says there were no images found. As best I know I haven't changed anything in my firefox or computer settings. I can still find images using Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome (which have all been installed long ago, just like firefox). I'm guessing something would have changed in an automatic update from Firefox or Microsoft, but I do not know enough to know where to look or what to do about it. So, maybe give me some clues about how to know about "What my search engine is", "How to change your search engine or its settings" or "Why a search engine might not show images."

can you try visiting https://www.google.com then try searching for something within google.com's search page You should be seeing the results, from there do you see the images tab/option?
