Videos are often in formats other than just the ones FlashPlayer provides. The majority of Firefox users do use FlashPlayer. There will still be a lot of content requiring it unfortunately, so it depends on what you try to look at.

First, grab the Adobe uninstaller from here: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html

Then download the latest Flash Plugin version from here: Select Plugin-based browsers - the EXE version. https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html

Run the Flash uninstaller program, then reboot your PC. Then install the Plugin version of Flash. So you'll have a clean installation of Flash for Firefox.

I think I may have solved this as I have removed all traces of adobe flash player from my computer and from Firefox and have added to Firefox the Windows media player Firefox plugin. It all seems to work OK now so can you just let me know if I have taken the right action or do I still need the dreaded Adobe plug in?
