My email address has stopped giving me emails from, for example, Lidl. A window appears, when I enter MY email address from the menu of addresses, "Login failed. Login to Server imap.aol.com failed" I am also given 3 choices in the same window which read "Retry Enter new password Cancel" I have tried all 3, repeatedly, for days now but to no avail.

Try to delete the password Thunderbird has remembered for your AOL account. Once a password has been deleted, you'll get prompted for the password the next time Thunderbird needs it, and then tell it again to save that password. You can delete the password using Tools -> Options -> Security -> Passwords -> Saved Passwords by selecting the password and then pressing the Remove button.

Trouble is I have this problem and it has happened so frequently (on two computers) that I have found that I can go away and come back and the problem has solved itself. I don't actually need to reenter the password as it asks me to. I can access my emails on by BT Yahoo webmail account and a bit later TB will be working again. Weird.
