PLEASE STOP RELEASING UNTESTED UPDATES

rousea

I use a number of add-ons that greatly enhance Thunderbird but they keep breaking as new updates are released:

Cardbook is a very useful address book add-on, integrating with my Google address book. However a few months ago it stopped working when a Thunderbird update was automatically installed (I think it was V158). The only way of overcoming this was to revert back to the ESR (Extended Support Release). That wasn't compatible with the database that had been modified by the latest release. Fortunately I had a back-up copy of the previous database which I had to recover.

A couple of months ago a new release stopped Cardbook working. By trial and error I discovered that Cardbook had been updated for compatibility with the latest Thunderbird release so I was able to restore normal operation by updating to Thunderbird V158.

Now Thunderbird has updated to V159 and Cardbook has stopped working again. If I open Cardbook it shows the address book completely empty. The Add-on Manager doesn't flag any compatibility issues. This is disasterous for me as I am totally dependent on using Cardbook.

Lightning Calendar Tabs is another useful add-on, giving access to my Google Calendar through a icon in the task bar. However that has also stopped working under V159. The Add-on Manager shows it as being incompatible with V159.

So why does Mozilla keep releasing updates that stop add-ons from working?. Can I revert back to V158 and stop further updates?

You can find the older version of Thunderbird here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-release

Maintenance of add-ons is the responsibility of the add-on developer, not of Thunderbird.

You might consider the add-on "Add-on Compatibility Check", which can warn you of upcoming incompatibilities.

You should also consider sticking with the Extended Support Release (ESR) release so you're not surprised by unexpected program changes.
