FIle save dialog cannot access smb volume

Firefox 45.0.2 OSX 10.6.8

Problem: file->save dialog shows mounted SMB (NTFS) volumes greyed out (therefore inaccessible). Safari has no trouble with the same volume. Neither does Finder.

It is usually greyed out if its inaccessible. Is it possible that the NTFS drive on the Mac has does not have ownership permissions on the mac account you are logged into? Or that it might not be installed?

Neither would explain why Safari or Finder could access the volume just fine.
