Cannot reopen existing gmail account - "Waiting for authorisation in login popup ..."
For various reasons related to password confusion I decided to delete an existing gmail account from Thunderbird 153.6.0esr 32-bit. I then tried to open it again using the existing email address (having done this many times before with no problem).
But I get stuck at this stage as I am waiting for a popup and nothing comes. I've tried deleting history and cookies, changing browsers, checking OAuth2, etc as suggested in various places, but still I get this spinning wheel going on and on.
Any suggestions?

- Who is your email provider?
- What is your operating system?
- What is your default web browser?
To force an OAuth2 re-authorize:
- Make sure cookies are allowed (see <Settings | Privacy & Security | Web Content | Accept cookies from sites>);
- Delete all cookies for that account (see <Settings | Privacy & Security | Web Content | Show Cookies>);
- Delete all entries for that account from Saved Passwords (see <Settings | Privacy & Security | Passwords | Saved Passwords>);
Now restart Thunderbird. You should be asked for your credentials, an OAuth2 token will be set, and hopefully they will be accepted and mail retrieval will resume.
Deleting history isn't likely to make any difference.
I'm not sure that this is an answer to my problem.
I have a gmail account that I can access on an Android phone and another PC laptop, it's that I can't recreate it on my desktop.
My default browser is Firefox and I run Windows 11.
When I type in the name of the account Thunderbird retrieves the configuration but when I press Continue it gets stuck on "Waiting for authorisation in login popup". What I don't understand is where this popup should appear. Is it in my default browser?
I've tried disabling extensions in Firefox and starting in safe mode. I've tried using a different default browser.
This used to be a very straightforward process and I've done it many times before, so don't know why it is now so difficult.
Did you try my steps to force an OAuth2 re-authorization? You should be presented with a sign-in window in your default browser, Firefox.
Yes, I've tried it twice now. I still get no sign-in window in Firefox.

Gets stranger. I pressed Cancel and then looked at Advanced Configuration. Not sure exactly what happened then but I got a message saying an account would be created, and now on the left side the account is there with an Inbox folder but no content.
On the bottom status bar it flashed up [address] looking up imap.gmail.com but never asks for a password.
Finally sorted. Nuclear option. I changed my default browser to Chrome and uninstalled Thunderbird. I installed v159.0 64-bit and then reloaded the existing email accounts. A popup appeared immediately in Chrome asking for passwords and I was able to reinstate everything.
Now I just have to do all the 2FA and cosmetic stuff. Thanks for the help.
